1080p is an expression for how many lines (pixel) is being changed per frame at your television screen. Normally your eyes see 24 (FPS) frames per second when watching a show or movie.

In the olden days the television sets had between 400 and 500 horizontal lines (pixel). I think it was about 570 lines in Europe (PAL-system) and 480 in the States (NTSC-system) if I remember correctly.

Back in 2006 or something we started seeing HD-Ready flatscreen TVs. Now the number of horizontal lines went up to 720 lines – hence the 720p and 720i definitions. Shortly after the Full-HD (not “fullscreen”) term came to use when TV companies presented the new type of flatscreens like LCD and Plasma widescreen televisions in “Full-HD”. Able to show the pictures in 1080p (progressive) and 1080i (interlaced). To compare the numbers, most computer monitors show a resolution 1024×768 pixel or 1280x1024 pixel, meaning that a 1080p picture is a little better than the 1280×1024 pixel computer resolution.
